West Brom striker Shane Long has been suffering from a heart problem, it has been revealed.
The 25-year-old was reportedly diagnosed with pericarditis, an inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart, brought on by an infection.
However, boss Roy Hodgson now reports the Irish striker to be back to full fitness and he could play against Wigan on Saturday. It would be his first start since New Year's Day.
The problem was discovered after Long struggled to breathe properly after coming on as sub against Norwich in January.
Hodgson told the Daily Mirror the scare had concerned all at the club.
"Anytime anything affects the heart region it's a concern of course, we don't take any injury or sickness lightly," he said.
"But whenever the heart is mentioned, you suddenly go into overdrive.
"We did all the tests. Quite extensive tests to be 100 per cent sure.
"It's important to check those things out because a heart injury is not like having a sore ankle or knee. But it was a virus which unfortunately settled in that area.
"In the end, there was never any question that his heart was in any way other than perfect shape."
